Club update EGM
@Old Verilamiums RFC 7.30pm
St Albans Centurions were founded back in 1996 and have been a leading member of the St Albans sporting scene for many years, proud to represent the city regionally and nationally.
Unfortunately, a number of factors have worked against the club in recent times and for the first year since the club's inception, it is unable to field an open age side. This is truly disappointing.
The Masters side for over 35s has now gone the same way.
And the once burgeoning junior section, now consists of just an u14s team, albeit this is a real positive.
As with any functioning community club, there needs to be a base of committed volunteers and players and this sadly, has not been the case in recent years.
The current chairman is due to stand down as a result of pressure from outside rugby league and is calling an Extraordinary General Meeting on 17th July at Old Verulamiums RFC AL2 1DW at 7.30pm where all parties who have even a passing interest in the survival of the Centurions is invited to attend, show their support and voice their views on the club next steps.
Sadly, one of those next steps could be the club folding, which would not be a good testament to all the hard work put in over the last 30 years.
The club needs your support and it needs it now.

The Inaugural "Clash of the codes" |
Cross-code rugby hit St Albans to honour a friend and teammate. The Cents would like to thank everyone who took part in the Inaugural Clash of the codes fixture. It was a great afternoon of league and union rugby to honour our late friend and team mate.
You can see a selection of the match photos here. St Albans Centurions were victorious by a single point in a highly competitive game of two halves. Our winning co-captains were presented with the "Toby Sweeney Memorial Cup" post-match by Toby's family. You can still donate to the fundraising efforts in aid of the RFU Injured Players Foundation, the chosen charity of Toby's family. U14 Season opener |
Junior rugby league returned to St Albans on Saturday, when the Centurions u14s played a cup game against Elmbridge Eagles. After a tough post Covid period when junior participation dipped, it was a real positive for the Centurions to get the game on and with really good player numbers in this game, the future is looking brighter. With representation from many of the local rugby union clubs, it's a credit to coach Rob Collins who has brought the boys together and got a great feeling amongst the squad.
As a result of ongoing challenges around their home ground at Toulmin Drive, the game was played at Vees Rugby Club, who, ironically played host to the first ever Centurions game back in 1995. To ensure all the players were engaged on the day, assistant coach Gary Tetlow ran training preceding the main game as the club strive to ensure a welcoming and inclusive feel. Vees also helped out with kit as the new Centurions kit, bought after receiving a generous grant from the 948 Foundation, had not arrived in time. The game itself was a superb advert for junior rugby league with plenty of positives to be drawn by coach Collins. The boys lost narrowly 24-22 with tries from Ollie Robinson(2), Charlie Latham, Charlie Krantz and Eli Ferguson. Particularly pleasing for the club is the number of young players involved whose dad's played for the club. Coach Collins added ‘ I am very pleased with the lads in their first ever game together against an experienced side. We have a lot to work on for the boys to understand the game better, but it was a fantastic start!’ The Centurions are very positive about the potential of their junior section and know, from experience, there is an appetite for rugby league in spring and summer. If you are a junior (16 and under), open age male or female player or you would be interested in Masters (over 35s) please contact [email protected]. Come along to a training session or two, try out the game |
East Rugby League Grand Final 2022
St Albans Centurions 58 -v- 32 Bedford Tigers Not only League Champions, but now Grand Final winners as well. Match report on Open Age page. Match day photos on our photo website. (6th Aug 2022) Sponsors Announced
The Cents can confirm that two of our long term and most supportive sponsors, The White Swan and Hertfordshire Air Conditioning have signed on again with us for the 2023 season. We also welcome Umbrella Environmental and Mr Scalp. Mrs Pauline Bottomley, wife of the much missed Tony Bottomley is also sponsoring us in Tony's memory. We want to thank them all, as running an amateur sports club takes a lot of money - as well as time and dedication - and their sponsorship really helps. Thank you from everyone at the club.
