ST ALBANS GO UNBEATEN TO TAKE 9-A-SIDE TROPHY St Albans Centurions kicked off the summer rugby league season in style by winning the East Rugby League 9-A-Side Tournament at Hemel Hempstead on Saturday. The Cents dominated the competition, and were unbeaten in their qualifying group and also in the semi finals and final. The annual 9 A-Side-Competition is played every year, as the 'kick off' to the East Rugby League season, and all the teams from the east Rugby League Premier and first divisions are invited to attend. In their pool games the Cents defeated Hemel Stags 10 points to 8, Brentwood Eels 10 points to 6, Milton Keynes Wolves 10 points to 8 and then drew 8 points each against North Herts and 14 points each against Luton Vipers. In the final The Cents faced Herts Crusaders and as the score was 8 points each at full time, 'Golden Point' (first to score) extra time was played. Centurions Sam Allen made sure the trophy was going to St Albans when he scored a great try under the posts to make the score 12 points to eight, and give the victory to the Cents. After the competition, Cents head coach Mike Hollister said " I am really pleased with that run out. I brought a mixed bag of players here today, some are in their first season with the club and this was balanced by a few more senior players. Very pleased we won the trophy and this gives us a boost going in to our first league game next Saturday." Cents will open the pre-season campaign this weekend on Sunday 9th April against West Warriors. It will be a mixed game between 1st and Development teams and offers the coaching team a good, tough test to see where there squad is for this year. With the influx of so many new local players and some senior players from last year moving on, it will be an interesting day.
