St Albans Centurions 40 -v- 32 Elmbridge Eagles U13's The Cents U13's are the London League Under 13's Champions after winning their final league game of the season. The boys have only lost one game in their run up to becoming Champions, although this game was in the balance until the last play of the game when a try out wide sealed their victory. Well done boys, we are proud of you. King's Lynn Black Knights 24 -v- 38 St Albans Centurions
St Albans Centurions backed up their East RL 2017 9-A-Side title by booking a place in the East RL Cup Final, after beating Kings Lynn Black Knights, at Kings Lynn, in the semi finals! They will play reigning Cup holders Bedford Tigers on July 8th after the Tigers were awarded a walkover victory after Brentwood Eels were forced to forfeit their game. It will be the Tigers fifth consecutive East RL Cup final. When the Cents and Tigers met in the league two weeks ago, Bedford won a very exciting game by just two points. The Cup Final will be played at the neutral venue of Hemel Stags ground as they were knocked out of the cup in an earlier round. St Albans Centurions 22 -v- 24 North Herts Crusaders It has been the story of their season that victories are just being missed by the odd point or try and this was no exception. The heat meant that the game was played over four 20-minute quarters instead of two-40 minute halves. Cents played two youngsters playing their first ever game of rugby league, and two more just playing their second game. And it led to a disjointed start for Cents as the Crusaders ran in two tries, one of which was converted, inside the first 10 minutes. The drinks break at the end of the first quarter brought no relief and another converted score stretched North Herts’ lead to 16. But that seemed to stir the hosts and half-back Sam Allen jinked in from 30 yards for a now customary try, before prop Simba Mupamhanga charged through three defenders for a second try, this one converted by Allen. But any hopes of Cents completing a comeback were soon dashed as history repeated itself with two tries in the opening 10 minutes of the third quarter. Neither were converted though and it meant St Albans were just about still in touch. New signing, 17-year-old Peter Wamamba Strain from Beaumont School, ran in a great try from 40 yards, his speed and side-stepping ability making him far too elusive for any tacklers. That was converted by the outstanding Allen, who picked up a cut to one eye and a bruise to the other after some hard North Herts tackles. And when he crossed for another converted try with just five minutes remaining, there was just two points in it. In injury time, after a great surge by St Albans, Allen was racing for the try-line when he was taken out with a stiff arm tackle around the head. The defender was sin-binned but a groggy Allen was unable to land the ensuing penalty, the kick brushing the outside of the upright on its way through. That was with seconds remaining and there was no time for St Albans to launch another attack as again they narrowly missed out on the win. Centurions travel to Kings Lynn on Saturday to play the Black Knights in the semi-final of the East Rugby League Cup. St Albans Centurions are through to the semi-finals of the East of England Cup after a comprehensive victory away to Milton Keynes Wolves. The bank holiday weekend played havoc with selection but the squad that travelled didn’t look overawed and bagged nine tries in the 48-18 win. Sam Allen continued his rich vein of form with a hat-trick, and also added six conversions. Alex Curtis added two while Scott Clelow, Simba Mupamhanga, Callum Porter and Peter Strain all went over for one each. But despite this it was the Wolves who took the lead on seven minutes, catching Cents out with some strong running. It woke St Albans up from their slumbers and Clelow burst over from close range to level the scores. Allen’s first straight from the kick-off gave them the advantage but Milton Keynes had the wind behinid them and retook the lead following a Cents’ knock-on. It would be the last time they were ahead. Prop Mupamhanga crashed over for a try converted by Allen and some good forward play after the restart sent Curtis in at the corner. Wolves added their final try, again converted, just before the break but it was St Albans who went in 22-18 in front. Three tries in 14 minutes killed the game as a contest. Curtis scored out wide again before Porter scored the try of the match, running onto a perfect pass from Allen to score near the posts. Allen got his second when he danced round the tiring defence to complete the try-scoring burst and give Cents a 38-18. Two more tries in the final 10 minutes ended the scoring. Allen got his hat-trick, which he converted, and right on the whistle Strain scorched in down the wing. The semi-final is scheduled to take place on June 17. It is back to league action this Saturday when Bedford Tigers arrive at Toulmin Drive for a 3pm kick-off. |
