Please find the following message that has just come through from Mike Stewart at Hemel Stags regarding a one off training session for juniors aged 5-17. It reads:- Leeds Rhinos are establishing a supporters branch for London and the South East. To launch this they are hosting an event at Hemel Stags on Tuesday 7th June. This is a Leeds Rhinos event. They are just basing it at Hemel Stags. There are 2 parts to the event. • 16:30-18:30 is a training session for juniors aged 5-17. This is open to anyone from any club or school. Session to be run by Francis Cummins (rugby league coach and former player. He was most recently the head coach of Super League team Bradford Bulls) and, Stevie Ward (rugby league footballer for Super League club Leeds Rhinos. He primarily plays at loose forward) along with their community coaches. • 19:00-21:00 is a supporters launch event being run by TV show Rugby AM including a rowing machine challenge, question of sport style quiz and Q&A with CEO Gary Hetherington, Stevie Ward, Francis Cummins and Danny Ward. It is important to note that when registering your attendance on the link below that the events are listed separately. If your son wishes to take part in the training session it's under the skills session. The supporters event is separate. If you and your son wishes to attend both, then you need to register for both. www.therhinos.co.uk/buytickets We welcome anyone to come along and enjoy the experience. Due to the fact that we have quite a few player injuries, and some players have family and other commitments over this bank holiday weekend, we could only raise a squad of ten players for this cup game, so rather than play the game with ten men (even if we were allowed to) the club decided to concede the game to Milton Keynes Wolves and not risk further injuries to any other players.
To say the club is disappointed is an understatement, as no one on the committee can ever remember the Cents forfeiting a game in our recent history. We hope this is the first and last time this will happen. Gentlemen
I am aware that there are some regrets that our game against the Army on Armed Forces Day, up in Warrington on 25th June, clashes with the Brighton 9s. Having been to the 9s, I appreciate that it’s a cracking event and I understand why it’s becoming something of a tradition. However, the chance to play, by invitation, in front of several thousand people in rugby league’s heartland is a one-off that I hope you’ll agree deserves to take precedence for this year only. It involves a very early start as we’re up first on a triple bill, kick-off 11.30am, but once the game’s over there will be plenty of beer tents, food stands and other activities to keep us occupied before we catch the coach home in time for a night out in St Albans. We have a 55-seat coach booked so there’s room for a few supporters to accompany us, and I’m led to believe that some former Centurions will be making their way to Warrington to join us, too. Oh, and it’s not a midweek game against the Army either, so we might have half-a-chance of winning this one! Cheers Bri Parker St Albans Centurions 44 -v- 24 Brentwood Eels
St Albans Centurions are now second in the East League table with this win over Brentwood Eels. A very even first half saw Brentwood go in at half time leading by 16 points to 14, but in the second half the Cents got their act together and there was some great rugby played - and some great tries scored - long range ones as well as some crashing over ones. Tries by Jake McLaughlin (2), Scott Clewlow (2), Joe Shaw, Brad Webber, Josh Lawrence, and Myles Costello (2). Conversions by Nick Woolley. Match report on First Team page, match day photos now on our photo website Match officials - whether we praise them or criticise them, we all know that without them there would not be competitive games of rugby league. Over the last few seasons the referee numbers have gone down. These days it is not unusual to have a referee officiate over two or three games on a Saturday, and now the Southern Rugby League Referees Society want to know if there is anyone out there who would like to have a go at picking up the whistle, either regularly or sporadically. There is a course coming up in Feltham, on the 6th June. The address is Feltham College, Browells Lane, Feltham, TW13 7EF. www.wlklms.com/rllecom – is the link pointing you to the pre-course laws element and people would need to do this before they attend. http://www.rugby-league.com/get_involved/match_officials/becoming_a_match_official – is the page where you can express your interest and join the course. So if you are an ex player, or just want to get involved in a sport where the man in the middle is still treated with respect by the players, then please consider becoming a rugby league referee. Cents Masters –v- London And Down South Masters (LADS)
The Centurions masters (Over 35’s) were in action before the seniors game, with a great display of rugby league played in the true spirit of the game. The teams, ranging in age from 35 to 65, play in different coloured shorts, each colour expressing the age of the player and how he is allowed to be tackled. Even though the hair may be greying, or in some cases none existent, you could still see the skills and enjoyment of the game shining through. At the end of what was an enjoyable, free flowing game, both teams retired to pitch side to partake in a barrel of specially brewed “Centurions XX” beer, brewed to commemorate the Centurions 20th anniversary year. Cents chairman Brian Parker said “We have got to thank Mick O’Shea, our masters co-ordinator, for arranging all of this. He did remarkably well.” Mick O’Shea added, “Masters is strictly a social version of the game of rugby league and the rules are slightly modified to cater for the older player. There are no winners, no losers, no champions and no cup finals. Masters is all about the spirit of the game and enjoying yourself.” Bragging rights were won by Cents in this local derby fixture. In this 20th anniversary year of the clubs foundation, it seemed appropriate that the first team we played at home this season was Hemel Stags, who were the first team the Cents ever played upon their foundation in 1996. Match report is on the 1st Team page and match day photos are on our photo website.
The first batch of St Albans Centurions 20th anniversary jerseys have just been delivered, and they will be at Saturdays game against Hemel Stags. So if you are one of the many people who have ordered one, come along to Toulmin Drive on Saturday to collect it. If you can't make it, don't worry, we will be putting info on our facebook page about how you can get them.
John McMullen, the RFL National Club and Competition Manager has made the draw for the Quarter Final of the East RL Cup. The draw was made at the RFL Headquarters in Media City, Salford and lines up as follows:
EAST RL CUP - QF DRAW Brentwood Eels v Hemel Stags NH Crusaders v Bedford Tigers St Albans Centurions v MK Wolves St Ives Roosters v Southend Spartans The games are to be played on Saturday 28th May at 3pm. The winning sides will progress to the semi final of the cup and the losing sides will drop into the Shield semi finals. St Ives Roosters 42 -v- 40 St Albans Centurions
The Cents came so close to pulling off an opening day upset when they visited last seasons league runners up and Grand Finalists, St Ives Roosters. It was a game of attrition as the teams took it in turns to score, with five minutes left, and Cents leading 36 - 40, St Ives took the lead just before the end. Cents thought they had won when Myles Costello crossed the line to score on the 77th minute, only to have their hopes dashed when the referee disallowed the try.
