St Albans Centurions have unveiled their new playing shirt for their 20th anniversary season, and it is a tribute to the strip in which the Cents completed their very first season in the Rugby League Conference, which was given to them by Bradford Northern Rugby League club all those years ago. Names of players, past and present, have been woven into the green bands that run round the shirt.
Cents chairman Brian parker said "We had quite a few discussions as to what kind of a shirt we would play in to commemorate 20 years of the club, and in the end we thought a modern version of our very first strip would be appropriate. When players register to play with the Cents they are given a blue warm up shirt and the new, white, club polo (above, right). However we have also produced another training top and club vest (above, left) that can be purchased by speaking to Sam Norris." Len McMain, St Albans Centurions long standing physio has been appointed the Serbian national team physio in their forthcoming World Cup Qualifying games. Len will be on duty with the Serbian team in October of this year when they play Italy in Belgrade and again when the Serbs take on the Welsh in Wales. Well done Len. The 2016 registration evening took place last night at the clubhouse, lots of old faces and a couple of new ones as well. Coach Andy Lake outlined some dates and events throughout the forthcoming season, and these are mentioned very briefly below:- The first pre season training session will start on Wednesday 30th March and will take place at St Albans RFC, Oaklands Lane, St Albans. Training will continue on Monday and Wednesday, under lights, until the evenings get lighter and we can start training on Tuesday and Thursday at Toulmin Drive. The season starts on 30th April with a 9-a-side tournament at Brentwood. Andy Lake hopes to take two 10 men squads to compete. Two pre season games are in the pipeline. One against Hammersmith Hills Hoists from the London League and one against North Herts Crusaders from the Eastern League. Dates and times to be arranged. To celebrate the Cents 20th anniversary, a 'black tie' event is being planned. Date to be confirmed. St Albans Centurions have been invited to compete in the 'Armed Forces Day' at Crosfield RLFC in Warrington. This annual competition, (last year it attracted 4000 spectators) is a series of rugby matches between sides from the British Army, Crosfields and a 'guest team', (this year, the Cents.) It is a very good social day out and as it falls on our 'free weekend' of 25th June, the club would like to hire a coach and attend in style. More details to follow. There will be a physio in attendance on training evenings to sort out those lumps & bumps. An end of season tour has been proposed to one of the fastest developing rugby league counties in Europe - Serbia, to compete against a Serbian rugby league club and then to be on the receiving end of some Serbian hospitality. Details to follow. And finally, just a reminder that this season will be a 'no pay, no play' one. If you haven't signed on and paid your fees, then you will not be allowed to play. Those who could not attend the registration event will be able to sign on and pay their registration at training evenings before the season starts. What more could a rugby club ask for, free food, free drink - and special commemorative beer glasses. St Albans Centurions were guests of honour at the grand re-opening of our sponsor, John McGuinness's pub, the White Swan in St Albans last night and a hundred beer glasses, with the Cents 20th anniversary logo on also made an appearance. If you want one of these beer glasses, you can purchase yours next Wednesday at our registration evening at the clubhouse, for the paltry sum of £4. If you cannot make it, just contact club chairman Brian Parker with your order. The East of England Under 20's Rugby League squad has been selected and Josh Lawrence will be representing St Albans Centurions. The 2016 East of England Region Under 20's Rugby League season starts on Saturday when the squad travel to play South Wales Under 20's. This programme has been built on the back of the U17 side who faced the Welsh National Academy last year, only losing the game by 4 points. Players have been pulled from clubs right across the Eastern region including Hemel Stags, North Herts Crusaders, Milton Keynes Wolves, Bedford Tigers, St Albans Centurions and Brentwood Eels. Once again the poster says it all, we have been invited by our main club sponsor, John McGuinness to come along and be guests of honour at his pub, The White Swan's, grand re-opening. It is invitation only and only those wearing an official Cents club polo shirt will be allowed in. John has been a great supporter of our club over the years and now it's our turn to support him and give him a good turn out. There promises to be food and drink a plenty and live entertainment, so get this in your diary and come along and support your club and our sponsor.
The above says it all unfortunately. Our supplier of the tops we would have been handing out at the registration evening have been let down by their suppliers, so there would be no 'stash' to give out. The committee thought it would be for the best to postpone the signing on evening for a couple of weeks until Wednesday 17th February when players and supporters will actually be given something back for their commitment to us.
Apologies to all, but it wasn't our fault. Hope to see you all on the 17th February at 7pm. |
