We look forward to welcoming back Adam Jasinski, Harry Mack, Nathan Orsmond and Peter Wampamba ahead of the upcoming season! Senior training is back on!
We will be kicking off our season with our first training session on Wednesday 31st March at 18:30 down at Toulmin Drive Playing Fields. Any new players are always welcome! If you have any questions please feel free to get in touch. It is with great sadness that we must inform you all of the passing of our long standing first team manager and club talisman Tony Bottomley. Tony did so much for the club over the years and played a huge role in getting us to where we are now. He had massive influence not only at St Albans Centurions but in grassroots rugby as a whole, he poured his energy into the sport to help it grow and develop wherever he went. He was rugby league through and through and will be deeply missed by all. We have lost a legend but the legacy he has left will always be in the heart of the Centurions. Rest in Peace - Tony Bottomley Jake used to play for St Albans Centurions Rugby League Club in Hertfordshire in the 2016 and 2017 season before he moved up to Yorkshire in 2018.
The back-rower impressed the Dons coach, during a pre-season trial at the club, during which he featured in the friendly against Sheffield Eagles at the Keepmoat Stadium. Head coach Richard Horne said: “Jake has been a big part of the group throughout our pre-season campaign and the lads have taken to him quickly. “He showed us what he can do in the Sheffield game and adds some competition for places in the pack. “With plenty of games to come in league and cup we will need everybody to put their hand up and perform well when selected.” The Dons play their first home league of the season against Barrow Raiders on Sunday March 1. After impressing in three rounds of trials, young Centurions players Akintayo "Josh" Adebayo and Andrew Spencer have been selected for the 22 man Midlands regional team of England universities, with the potential of gaining full England honors after a round of matches against other regions.
See the full England Universities regional squad announcement here https://www.rugby-league.com/leagues__competitions/university/article/56068/england-universities-rugby-league-regional-games This selection follows a strong season for the University of Nottingham where Adebayo and Spencer study as they remain unbeaten, despite grudge matches against fellow Cents player Rob Campbell at the University of Birmingham. Already internationally representative Cents starlets Peter Wampamba-Strain (Africa United Lions) and Godson Sado (Nigeria) also came to face each other in a game of University Rugby Union with Peter taking the victory in a tough contest. All regional games take place at the University of Birmingham on saturday the 30th of November. Well, a lot has happened at The Cents since the regular season ended in August, and most of it centres around representative matches.
A big well done must go to Joe Baker and Kristian Naylor who are representing St Albans in the East RL team in the end of season inter regional league games, and another well done to Godson Sado, Akintayo Adebayo and Peter Wampamba Strain who represented West Africa United and Africa United Lions respectively in the biggest 9 a-side rugby league festival in the world, The London 9's. Godson has also made it to the Nigerian Rugby League train on squad. And we mustn't forget our physio Len McMain who at the end of our season, joined up with the Serbian Rugby League for their international match versus Canada, and also helped out at Red Star Belgrade RL. Well done to all the above. All change at the Cents. Just to keep everyone updated, there has been a few changes at the club. Chairman Andy Lake and club secretary Tony Bottomley are standing down as from today, but the good news is that club stalwarts Callum Porter has volunteered to be the new club chairman and Alex Powdrell is taking on Tony's roll as club secretary and first team manager. Dave Parsons remains the club treasurer. We look forward to a great 2020 season with these two young men in the driving seat. And just to give plenty of notice, St Albans Centurions are in the 1st round draw of the Rugby League Challenge Cup, which will take place in January.
Also updating the below entry, Kristian Naylor has been selected to play for the England Lionhearts. The England Lionhearts are selected from players in the Rugby League Conference. They compete against Wales A, Scotland A "Bravehearts" and Ireland A "Wolfhounds" each year in the Amateur Four Nations competition. All change at the Cents. Sunday saw St Albans Centurions Masters join forces with Southampton Spitfires, Medway Dragons, Halcyon Masters and a couple from West Warriors to take on Globetrotting South London Silverbacks at London Broncos!
We were due to play on pitch 1 but pitch 2 seemed just as good so we played there instead. Poo pooing the Broncos offer of the toilet block to change in, the teams changed at pitchside, the rules were explained and a great match started! 23 players in total got entertained with some decent runs and good defence on display. Plenty of tries were scored and lots of fun was had. Ben Moralee, Phil Bignell, new recruit Danny Martindale, Mad Mark from Watford and Mick O'Shea represented the Centurions in the 20th Anniversary Strip. Ex Centurion Glenn Tyreman played too. Everyone stayed to watch the Broncos beat table toppers St Helens afterwards with Gary Tetlow, Steve Kenworthy and Gavin Willacy in the crowd also. Cheers to Haden Jackson Robbins for the photos and video! |
